WUTV: Washington University Television

About Us

Our Mission

WUTV is Washington University's Premier (and only) student run television station. We provide a venue that allows for the education and advancement of students seeking hands on experience in broadcast and related industries as well as students who simply have an interest in TV. In doing so, WUTV provides an entertainment and information venue for the student body of Washington University through original student programming and first-run movies viewable for free on channel 22 through campus cable.

Our History

What we know: WUTV was born of a pool of discontent. Students from across the entire WashU campus cried out for a closed circuit television station. A place where they could say bad words and inside jokes. On September 8th, 1996, sophomore Dan Boeckman took the initiative to siphon funds from the Chancellor's emergency wine and cheese fund and set up an amateur station in the basement of century-old Prince Hall. Prince Hall was chosen for its labyrinth-like hallways and mold encrusted ceilings; the perfect location for a pirate cable television station. WUTV operated for nearly 10 years without the knowledge of any upper administration.

In 2006, demolition workers discovered the station, as well as four sleeping members of the WUTV personnel, after razing had already begun on Prince Hall. The next day, Student Life reported that WUTV had been operating since 1996 without anybody noticing. Upon reading this, the Chancellor took it upon himself to ensure that WUTV would no longer have to exist only in rumors and bootleg videotape (despite being broadcast on cable since 1996). He immediately diverted funds to WUTV, ironically from his emergency wine and cheese account, which allowed the station to set up a temporary studio in the basement of Mallinckrodt. WUTV finally came out of the underground in 2008, and is now located on the third floor of the Danforth University Center, in the ashes of Prince Hall and the original WUTV studio.
